“It’s also my birthday, … just so you know.” When is Rapunzel’s Birthday? I think Rapunzel would have been born during Midsummer—anytime from June 21st to June 24th. Why do I think this? Well, Tangled obviously takes place during summer, judging by Rapunzel’s words in “When Will My Life Begin? (Reprise)”: Just feel that summer breeze, the way it’s calling me! Most of the movie occurs over three days (not including the day Rapunzel is reunited with her parents), and each day in Tangled is very long, if you consider everything that happens, especially on the first day. Some American fans may not realize it, but summer days in Europe are rather longer than summer days in even the most northerly places in the contiguous U.S. (so not counting Alaska). Giving them all the time they need to steal crowns, run through the forest all the way to Tower, get knocked out/hide someone in the closet for about an hour, negotiate with their captor/captive, walk to the Snuggly Duckling, sing a song about their dreams, escape through a tunnel, use a frying pan to battle a swordfighting horse, escape from a flooded cave, and make a campfire. Considering how long it must take to get from the Kingdom to the Tower (and that Flynn & the Stabbington Brothers left the Kingdom at about “eight in the morning”), that should account for several hours. Also, springtime in Europe would be slightly dirtier and wetter and colder. Were the Disney animators thinking about how long the days in Europe would be? Well, they certainly spent a lot of time researching architecture and forests in central Europe, so I think they would also be thinking about whether it was possible for all of these things to happen in one day. It takes a while to make these films, so you might as well be taking the time to think about such things. Most importantly, the Kingdom of Corona is a kingdom that celebrates the sun. They have it as their Kingdom symbol, for a start. It just seems like something that would fit into the tone of the story—that the Princess would be born around or during Midsummer. So, I consider today and/or the next three days to be Rapunzel’s birthday! Happy Birthday Rapunzel!
